Summit House Project
Summit House is a unique and extreme style of contemporary,
cutting edge residential architecture. Glenn Vogel, a custom architectural metal
fabricator, and sculptor, designed Summit House for he, his wife and their
three children. Glenn's interest in the classic mining structures of California
and Colorado,
and his life long interest in architecture paved the way to this zero
maintenance home.
"The key to a unique home such as this is the blending of
industrial, commercial, and residential construction techniques and materials".
The 6,000 square foot home is framed with over 55 tons of structural A-588
weathering steel (Cor-ten.) Designed with all wall and roof components as
bypass, the massive steel framework is left completely exposed to the interior.
The exterior as well as some of the interior walls are
corrugated Cor-ten weathering steel. Concrete floors throughout the residence
feature hydronic heat. The entrance to the residence features an atrium full of
tropical foliage reaching toward the ceiling 26 feet above. A staircase takes
you up to the main floor, and into the great room.
The great room is 2,000 square feet, and the ceilings rise 28
feet above. The great room has a professional style gourmet kitchen, dining
area, living area, and a media area. A few steps up delivers you to the 3rd
floor, a split level between the main and 4th floors. This area has been
assigned to bedrooms, bathrooms, and a secluded family room. A massive steel
staircase rises to the 4th floor, leading over a grated walkway to the master
suite, and also to a gym area. The house also features an additional 2,000
square feet of outdoor space consisting of a complete al-fresco kitchen,
wrap-around patio and deck. Local interior designer, Monica Durante (www.monicadurante.com)
worked with Glenn and Lanette on the interior design.
The greatest feature on the project however, is the setting of
the house. The home site is framed with large granite outcroppings, and looks
out onto one of the most spectacular views on the front range. Perfectly framed
in the six 8' x 16' bay windows is Mt. Evans, a 14,264 foot peak, featuring the
highest paved road in North America.
